Terbinafine subungual gel is an antifungal medication formulated specifically for application to the nail bed through the subungual space (the tiny air gap accessed at the free edge of the toenail). This novel delivery method allows the medication to reach infection sites directly in therapeutic concentrations. Terbinafine works by preventing the growth of fungi through inhibition of squalene epoxidase, an enzyme needed for fungal cell membrane synthesis. The subungual gel formulation is being developed by Hallux Inc. as a physician-administered treatment for onychomycosis (fungal nail infections), requiring less frequent application than traditional topical treatments.
