Overview

Terbium-152 is a radioactive isotope of the rare earth element terbium. It is primarily used as a positron-emitting radionuclide for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging in nuclear medicine. With a half-life of approximately 17.9 hours, it enables extended imaging sessions and real-time monitoring of radiopharmaceutical biodistribution and pharmacokinetics[5][1][6]. Terbium-152 can be incorporated into receptor-targeted radiopharmaceuticals by chelation to biological molecules that selectively deliver it to tumor cells or other tissues of interest[7][9]. Its decay characteristics—positron emission with multiple gamma lines—make it suitable for both PET imaging and potentially SPECT applications[10]. Terbium isotopes are considered part of a theranostic toolbox due to their matched chemical properties but differing decay modes; this allows for seamless transition between diagnostic (imaging) and therapeutic applications using chemically identical agents labeled with different isotopes[1][6][10]. Clinical studies have demonstrated the feasibility of using ^{152}Tb-labeled compounds in first-in-human PET/CT scans for cancer diagnostics and pretherapeutic dosimetry[7].
