Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Terbutaline is a selective beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist used primarily as a bronchodilator to prevent and treat bronchospasm in patients with asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and other reversible obstructive airway diseases. It works by stimulating beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the smooth muscle of the airways, leading to activation of adenylyl cyclase and increased cyclic AMP (cAMP), which results in relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle and improved airflow. Terbutaline is available as oral tablets and injectable formulations. While it has been used off-label for preterm labor, this use is not recommended due to serious maternal and fetal risks[1][2][3][4][5][6].
