Terbutaline + theophylline is an oral combination drug used primarily for the management of respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchitis, emphysema, and bronchospasms. Terbutaline is a selective beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that relaxes bronchial smooth muscle to produce bronchodilation. Theophylline is a methylxanthine derivative that acts as a non-selective phosphodiesterase inhibitor and adenosine receptor antagonist; it increases intracellular cyclic AMP levels leading to bronchodilation and has mild anti-inflammatory effects. The combination provides additive or synergistic improvement in lung function compared to monotherapy with either agent alone[1][2][4]. It helps relieve symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath[4]. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, tremors, palpitations, increased heart rate, restlessness or nervousness[3][4].
