Terbutaline sulphate is a small molecule pharmaceutical drug classified as a selective beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist. It acts primarily by stimulating beta-2 adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle, leading to activation of adenylyl cyclase and increased intracellular cyclic AMP (cAMP). This cascade results in decreased intracellular calcium, relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle, and bronchodilation. Terbutaline sulphate is indicated for the prevention and reversal of bronchospasm in patients 12 years of age and older with asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or other reversible obstructive airway diseases. It is available as oral tablets and injectable formulations. While it has been used off-label as a tocolytic agent to delay preterm labor, this use is not recommended due to serious maternal and fetal risks[1][5][6][9].
