Terconazole is a synthetic triazole antifungal agent primarily used to treat vulvovaginal candidiasis (vaginal yeast infections). It is available as a vaginal cream and suppository. Terconazole works by inhibiting the fungal cytochrome P450 enzyme lanosterol 14α-demethylase, which disrupts ergosterol synthesis—a key component of fungal cell membranes—leading to increased membrane permeability and inhibition of fungal growth. This mechanism provides selectivity for fungi over mammalian cells. Terconazole was first approved in 1987 and has demonstrated high efficacy and safety in clinical use[1][5][6][7][8].
