Drug intelligence / Profile preview
HZ023 is an orodispersible film formulation of teriflunomide, an immunomodulatory agent developed by Zhejiang Heze Pharmaceutical Technology. It is designed for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), including clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), and active secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS). Teriflunomide acts as a selective and reversible inhibitor of the mitochondrial enzyme dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH), which is the rate-limiting enzyme in the de novo pyrimidine synthesis pathway. By blocking DHODH, HZ023 inhibits the proliferation of rapidly dividing, activated T and B lymphocytes that drive the inflammatory and autoimmune processes in MS, while sparing resting lymphocytes that can utilize the salvage pathway. HZ023 is being evaluated in clinical trials to demonstrate bioequivalence and comparable bioavailability to the reference teriflunomide tablet, Aubagio.
