Teriparatide is a recombinant form of human parathyroid hormone (PTH 1-34), consisting of the first 34 amino acids of the natural hormone. It acts as a potent osteoanabolic agent by stimulating new bone formation, increasing bone mineral density and strength, and reducing fracture risk. Teriparatide is primarily indicated for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at high risk for fracture, men with primary or hypogonadal osteoporosis at high risk for fracture, and adults with osteoporosis associated with sustained systemic glucocorticoid therapy. Its mechanism involves agonism at the parathyroid hormone receptor to promote osteoblast activity and bone formation[1][3][4][8]. The drug was first approved in the United States in 2002.
