Overview

*Terminalia glaucescens* is a plant species whose aqueous leaf extract (ALET) is being investigated for its potential chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic properties, particularly in liver and urinary bladder cancers. The extract is rich in phenolic compounds and flavonoids, exhibiting significant antioxidant and free-radical-scavenging activities. In preclinical studies, ALET has demonstrated antiproliferative effects against human liver (HepG2) and urinary bladder (MC-T11) cancer cell lines. Its mechanism of action involves ATP depletion, reduction of glutathione levels, and mitochondrial toxicity, leading to its classification as a potential "mitocan" (mitochondria-targeting anticancer agent). Research is primarily conducted by academic institutions such as the University of Ibadan and the University of California, Los Angeles.
