Terpineol

Terpineol is a naturally occurring monoterpene alcohol found in the essential oils of many plants such as pine and eucalyptus. It exists as four isomers—alpha-, beta-, gamma-terpineol, and terpinen-4-ol—with alpha-terpineol being the most commercially significant. Terpineols are widely used for their pleasant lilac or pine aroma in perfumes, cosmetics, food flavorings, and cleaning products[3][6][8]. In pharmaceutical applications, terpineols serve as adjuncts in treatments for upper respiratory tract congestion due to their anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties[1][6][8]. Alpha-terpineol has demonstrated potential anticancer activity by inhibiting the Nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) pathway and protein kinases involved in cell proliferation[7]. Additional reported effects include antioxidant activity, antimicrobial action against bacteria and fungi, pain relief, mood enhancement, stress reduction, support for gastrointestinal health[5], and use as a skin penetration enhancer[7]. Terpineols are also valued industrially as solvents and emulsifiers.
