Drug intelligence / Profile preview
tert-Butanol is a small molecule and a tertiary alcohol with the chemical formula C4H10O. It is primarily used as an industrial solvent and chemical intermediate in the production of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE), and other chemicals. It also serves as a denaturant for ethanol and an ingredient in paint removers and gasoline additives. In biological research settings it has been used as a probe for hydroxyl radicals. Pharmacologically experimental only—not approved for medical use—tert-butanol acts as an inhibitor of calmodulin proteins (calmodulin-1/2/3). It is rapidly absorbed if inhaled or ingested; high doses can produce sedative or anesthetic effects[1][2][5].
