Tertatolol is a non-cardioselective beta blocker (β-blocker) used primarily for the treatment of hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. It lacks intrinsic sympathomimetic activity and does not selectively block either β1 or β2 adrenergic receptors. Tertatolol competitively inhibits beta-adrenergic receptors and has been shown to reduce the number of these receptors on cell surfaces after administration. In addition to its primary action as a beta blocker, tertatolol also acts as an antagonist at serotonin 5-HT1A and 5-HT1B receptors. The drug exhibits unique renal vasodilatory effects at the microcirculation level and can inhibit human mesangial cell proliferation in vitro; however, this effect is not fully explained by its known mechanisms of action. Tertatolol was discovered by Servier and is marketed in Europe under several brand names[1][3][4][5][6][7].
