Overview

Libifem (in the context of Emotional Brain BV) refers to a combination drug candidate consisting of sublingual testosterone and sildenafil, developed for the treatment of female sexual dysfunction (FSD), including hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) and female sexual arousal disorder (FSAD). The therapy employs a dual-mechanism approach: sublingual testosterone is intended to increase the brain's sensitivity to sexual stimuli by acting on androgen receptors, while sildenafil, a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, enhances peripheral physiological arousal by increasing vaginal blood flow. This combination aims to synchronize the psychological and physiological aspects of sexual response. The 'Libifem' name is primarily associated with a Phase 2 clinical trial conducted in the Netherlands that evaluated the efficacy of this combination in women with FSD. The same combination was later more widely known under the brand name Lybrido.
