Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Testosterone 0.03% ophthalmic solution is a topical androgen therapy developed by ORA for the treatment of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Meibomian glands are specialized sebaceous glands in the eyelids that secrete meibum, a lipid-rich substance essential for stabilizing the tear film and preventing evaporation. Androgen receptors are expressed in the meibomian gland epithelial cells, and androgen signaling is a key regulator of gland function and lipid synthesis. Deficiency in local androgen levels is associated with MGD and subsequent evaporative dry eye disease. By delivering testosterone directly to the ocular surface, this formulation acts as an androgen receptor agonist to stimulate meibomian gland activity, improve the quality and quantity of meibum, and restore tear film stability.
