Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Testosterone spray is a transdermal metered-dose formulation of the steroid hormone testosterone, developed by VIVUS in collaboration with Acrux for the treatment of Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) in post-menopausal women. The product utilizes Acrux's proprietary MD-Lotion technology, which allows for the delivery of testosterone through the skin into the systemic circulation. By binding to and activating the androgen receptor, the drug aims to restore testosterone levels to a physiological range, thereby improving sexual desire and related distress. Development was primarily focused on providing a more convenient alternative to transdermal patches like Intrinsa. Although Phase 1 bioavailability studies were completed, VIVUS did not progress the candidate into late-stage clinical trials for this indication.
