Axiron is a prescription underarm (axillary) topical solution containing testosterone, the primary endogenous male androgen. It is indicated for adult males with low or absent endogenous testosterone (male hypogonadism). The drug acts by supplementing or replacing natural testosterone to restore normal physiological levels and functions. Testosterone exerts its effects by binding to androgen receptors in various tissues, promoting the development and maintenance of male secondary sex characteristics such as muscle mass, bone density, facial/body hair growth, deepening of the voice, and sexual function. Axiron was developed as a metered-dose pump delivering 30 mg of testosterone per actuation for application to the axilla. The product has been discontinued in the U.S., but generic equivalents may exist[1][2][5].
