Tetanus antitoxin is a medication derived from the serum of horses hyperimmunized against Clostridium tetani toxin. It provides temporary passive immunity by neutralizing circulating tetanus toxin, but does not affect toxin already bound to nerve tissues. It is used for prophylaxis and treatment of tetanus in individuals with high-risk wounds who are not fully immunized or whose immunization status is unknown. The equine-derived product carries a risk of hypersensitivity reactions and serum sickness, so human tetanus immunoglobulin (TIG) is preferred in humans when available[2][4][5]. In veterinary medicine, it remains widely used for animals at risk of or infected with tetanus[1][6].
