Tdap is a combination vaccine designed for booster immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) in adolescents and adults. It is formulated with inactivated tetanus toxoid, a reduced dose of diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis antigens (typically including pertussis toxoid, filamentous hemagglutinin, and pertactin). The reduced concentrations of diphtheria and pertussis components distinguish it from the pediatric DTaP vaccine, aiming to minimize local adverse reactions in older populations while maintaining protective immunity. The vaccine works by inducing the production of neutralizing antibodies against the toxins produced by *Clostridium tetani*, *Corynebacterium diphtheriae*, and *Bordetella pertussis*. It is routinely recommended for pregnant women to facilitate the transplacental transfer of maternal antibodies to the neonate, providing early protection against pertussis.
