The regimen consists of **tetracaine**, a local anesthetic that enhances the penetration of subsequent drops by reducing the blink reflex and potentially disrupting the corneal epithelium; **tropicamide**, a muscarinic antagonist that causes mydriasis by paralyzing the sphincter pupillae muscle; and **phenylephrine**, an alpha-1 adrenergic agonist that stimulates the dilator pupillae muscle. This triple combination is evaluated to optimize screening for diabetic retinopathy, where maximal dilation is required for accurate fundus examination.
