Overview

This pharmacological regimen is a combination of three agents used to induce rapid and effective pupil dilation (mydriasis), particularly in patients who may be resistant to standard dilating drops, such as those with diabetes. The regimen consists of **tetracaine**, a local anesthetic that enhances the penetration of subsequent drops by reducing the blink reflex and potentially disrupting the corneal epithelium; **tropicamide**, a muscarinic antagonist that causes mydriasis by paralyzing the sphincter pupillae muscle; and **phenylephrine**, an alpha-1 adrenergic agonist that stimulates the dilator pupillae muscle. This triple combination is evaluated to optimize screening for diabetic retinopathy, where maximal dilation is required for accurate fundus examination.
