Overview

This is a compounded combination of two antimicrobial agents, tetracycline and amphotericin B, used primarily for the treatment of mixed fungal and bacterial infections. Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding reversibly to the 30S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing aminoacyl-tRNA from attaching to the ribosome and halting protein production[4]. Amphotericin B is an antifungal agent that binds irreversibly to ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, forming pores that disrupt membrane integrity and cause leakage of intracellular components, leading to cell death[5][6]. The combination has been shown experimentally to be effective against certain systemic mycoses (such as coccidioidomycosis), with evidence suggesting synergistic or additive effects—allowing for lower doses of amphotericin B while maintaining efficacy[1][2][3][8]. This may reduce toxicity associated with high-dose amphotericin B therapy. The formulation can be used in treating infections such as coccidioidomycosis, paracoccidioidomycosis, sporotrichosis, candidiasis, blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, aspergillosis, and cryptococcosis[1].
