Overview

Tetracycline + clotrimazole is a topical combination of two antimicrobial agents. Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing the addition of amino acids to growing peptide chains. Clotrimazole is an imidazole antifungal agent that disrupts fungal cell membrane synthesis by inhibiting ergosterol production, leading to increased membrane permeability and cell death. This combination has been studied for its effects on mixed microbial infections, particularly in dermatological conditions such as palmar arsenical keratosis, where both bacterial (e.g., Enterobacter spp.) and fungal (e.g., Aspergillus spp.) pathogens may be present[1][2][3]. The combination has shown in vitro inhibition of both bacteria and fungi but did not demonstrate statistically significant clinical superiority over monotherapy or placebo in limited clinical studies[1]. There are no widely recognized brand names or commercial formulations for this specific combination; it is typically prepared as a compounded ointment.
