Tetrahydrocurcumin is a major metabolite of curcumin produced by the reduction of curcumin *in vivo* and found in turmeric (*Curcuma longa*). It is a beta-diketone compound with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Mechanistically, tetrahydrocurcumin acts as a free radical scavenger and upregulates antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione-S-transferase[1][6]. It also exhibits cytoprotective effects against oxidative stress-induced cellular damage and has demonstrated anticancer activity through induction of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis via the mitochondrial pathway[8]. Compared to curcumin, it is more stable but has low bioavailability due to poor solubility; various nanoformulations are being developed to address this limitation[5]. Its pharmacological activities include potential applications in cancer chemoprevention/therapy and cardiovascular protection[1][6].
