Overview

Tetrahydrogestrinone (THG) is a synthetic, orally active anabolic–androgenic steroid (AAS) that was never marketed for medical use. Developed by chemist Patrick Arnold as a "designer drug" to evade detection in sports doping tests, it is structurally related to other steroids such as norbolethone, desoxymethyltestosterone, trenbolone, and gestrinone. THG acts primarily as an agonist of the androgen receptor and exhibits both anabolic and androgenic effects. It binds with high affinity to the androgen receptor, activates AR-mediated signaling pathways, promotes myogenesis in mesenchymal multipotent cells, and increases muscle mass in animal models. Despite its potency as an anabolic agent, it has never been fully tested for safety or approved for legitimate medical use. Its notoriety stems from its clandestine use among elite athletes before being identified by anti-doping authorities[1][3][5][6].
