Tetrahydroindenoindole (THII) is a small molecule antioxidant and research compound investigated for its potential to mitigate metabolic side effects associated with second-generation antipsychotics, such as olanzapine. In preclinical studies, THII has demonstrated the ability to prevent excessive weight gain, adiposity, and insulin resistance in mice by reducing oxidative stress in white adipose tissue. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of NADPH oxidase-dependent reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and the prevention of lipid peroxidation, while also promoting mitochondrial respiration and whole-body energy expenditure. THII is primarily used as a laboratory tool to study the role of oxidative stress in drug-induced metabolic dysfunction.
