Tetrakis(carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (TCPP) is a synthetic small molecule porphyrin derivative primarily utilized as a photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy (PDT) research. Upon activation by specific wavelengths of light, TCPP generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as singlet oxygen, which induce oxidative stress and selective destruction of targeted tumor cells. Beyond its role in PDT, TCPP has been investigated for its ability to bind to CD320 (the cellular receptor for transcobalamin II), which is often overexpressed in various cancers, potentially allowing for targeted imaging or drug delivery. It also functions as a metal chelator and is used in the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and biosensors. Currently, TCPP is primarily a research compound and is not in formal clinical development by any pharmaceutical company.
