Tetramethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide used for the control of household and agricultural pests. It acts as a nerve cell membrane **sodium channel modulator** in insects by interfering with the entrance of sodium ions into axonal channels. This leads to hyperactivity of the nervous system and ultimately paralysis or death in target pests. Tetramethrin is commonly formulated as a mixture of stereoisomers and is found in many commercial insecticide products for residential and commercial use. It has been classified as a Category 2 carcinogen by the European Commission Directorate-General for the Environment[5][7]. The compound was withdrawn from at least one region but remains registered for use in others[4][7].
