Overview

Tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) is a synthetic heterocyclic compound belonging to the porphyrin family, characterized by four phenyl groups attached to the meso-positions of the porphine core. In biomedical research, TPP and its metallated derivatives (such as zinc, iron, or manganese complexes) are primarily developed as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT). When exposed to specific wavelengths of light, TPP undergoes electronic excitation and transfers energy to molecular oxygen, generating highly reactive singlet oxygen and other reactive oxygen species (ROS). These ROS induce oxidative damage, leading to apoptosis or necrosis in targeted tissues, such as lung cancer cells or fungal pathogens. Beyond its therapeutic potential, TPP is utilized in tumor imaging, targeted drug delivery systems, and as a catalyst in various chemical processes including CO2 reduction and water electrolysis.
