Overview
Cathasept is a catheter lock solution containing 4% tetrasodium edetate (tetra-sodium EDTA). It is designed to prevent microbial colonization and catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis via tunneled catheters. The solution exerts both antimicrobial and anticoagulant effects. By chelating divalent cations such as calcium and magnesium, it disrupts bacterial cell walls and biofilms while simultaneously inhibiting the calcium-dependent coagulation cascade. Developed by Covidien (formerly Tyco Healthcare), Cathasept has been evaluated in multicenter randomized controlled trials comparing its efficacy and safety against standard heparin locks, demonstrating a significant reduction in catheter colonization.
