The tetravalent inactivated enterovirus vaccine is a multivalent, whole-virus, inactivated vaccine developed to prevent hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) caused by four major enteroviruses: Enterovirus 71 (EV71), Coxsackievirus A16 (CA16), Coxsackievirus A10 (CA10), and Coxsackievirus A6 (CA6). The mechanism of action involves the induction of neutralizing antibodies against these viruses, providing broad protection for children who are most at risk for HFMD. This approach addresses the challenge of low cross-immunogenicity among different causative viruses. The world's first such tetravalent candidate was developed by Sinovac Biotech and approved for clinical trials as of December 2024[2]. The primary indication is prevention of HFMD.
