It acts by stimulating alpha‑1 adrenergic receptors in the arterioles of the conjunctiva and nasal mucosa, leading to vasoconstriction. This mechanism reduces redness and swelling in the eyes caused by minor irritants (such as dust, smoke, or pollen) and relieves nasal congestion. Tetryzoline is available over-the-counter in eye drops (notably under brands like Visine) for temporary relief of eye redness and irritation, as well as in some nasal sprays (e.g., Tyzine). It may be combined with other agents such as lubricants or antihistamines for enhanced effect.
