Overview
Tetterine is an over-the-counter (OTC) topical antifungal ointment developed and manufactured by the S.S.S. Company. The formulation contains 2% miconazole nitrate, a small molecule imidazole antifungal agent. Tetterine is indicated for the treatment of superficial fungal skin infections, specifically athlete's foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and ringworm (tinea corporis). Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the fungal enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase, which is essential for the biosynthesis of ergosterol. The resulting depletion of ergosterol and accumulation of methylated sterol precursors lead to the disruption of fungal cell membrane integrity and inhibition of fungal growth. Marketed since 1883, Tetterine is available in ointment and cream forms and is produced in compliance with FDA cGMP standards.
