Overview

Teucrium polium is a wild perennial herb of the Lamiaceae family, traditionally used in folk medicine across Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia for a range of conditions, notably type 2 diabetes, abdominal pain, indigestion, inflammation, and rheumatologic disorders[1][2][5][7]. The plant contains various bioactive compounds, mainly terpenes, terpenoids, and flavonoids, which have demonstrated antioxidant, hepatoprotective, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer properties in preclinical studies[2][3][6][7]. Its mechanism of action is attributed primarily to its antioxidant components (particularly flavonoids with ortho-dihydroxy substitution in the B-ring), and possible modulation of glucose metabolism, inflammatory pathways, and microbial activity[1][2][3][6]. The herb is consumed as an infusion, extract, or tea, but adverse effects like nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity have been reported, warranting caution in its use[1].
