Overview

TFF2 (Trefoil Factor 2) is a small, secreted protein and one of the three members of the trefoil factor family. It is predominantly expressed in the gastrointestinal mucosa, especially in mucous cells of the gastric lining. TFF2 plays a crucial role in protecting and repairing gastrointestinal mucosa by stabilizing the mucus layer, inhibiting gastric acid motility and secretion, and promoting epithelial healing. It interacts with glycoproteins in mucus through carbohydrate side chains to stabilize the gel structure. In addition to its protective roles in normal tissue, TFF2 has been investigated for its potential therapeutic effects against gastric and pancreatic cancers; it is epigenetically silenced in some cancers, suggesting a tumor-suppressive function[1][5][6]. Recombinant forms such as TNX-1700 are under development for cancer therapy.
