Overview

TG4040 is an investigational therapeutic vaccine developed for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. It is based on a modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA) viral vector that expresses non-structural proteins of HCV, specifically NS3, NS4, and NS5B. The primary mechanism of action is to induce a strong and broad T cell-mediated immune response against HCV-infected cells by stimulating the immune system to recognize and attack these viral proteins. TG4040 was developed by Transgene and has undergone phase I and II clinical trials in combination with standard-of-care therapies such as pegylated interferon alpha-2a and ribavirin in patients with chronic HCV genotype 1 infection. Despite promising immunogenicity data, development for hepatitis C was discontinued after phase II trials[1][2][3][4][5].
