Overview

Thallous chloride is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical used primarily for myocardial perfusion imaging and parathyroid localization. It contains the radioisotope Thallium-201 and is administered intravenously. In the body, it behaves similarly to potassium ions and is taken up by viable myocardial tissue via active transport mechanisms in cell membranes. This property allows it to be used in single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) or planar scintigraphy to localize areas of reversible (ischemia) or non-reversible (infarction) defects in coronary artery disease. It is also indicated for pre- and post-operative localization of sites of parathyroid hyperactivity in patients with elevated serum calcium and parathyroid hormone levels[1][2][3]. The drug was first approved in 1979 for these uses[3].
