Overview

DBS-002 (thaumatin) is a recombinant sweet-tasting protein being developed by Dandu Biosciences as a non-caloric sweetener and flavor enhancer for the management of metabolic disorders, including diabetes and obesity. Thaumatin is a highly potent sweet-tasting protein originally derived from the West African katemfe fruit (*Thaumatococcus daniellii*). It is known for its intense sweetness, which is several thousand times that of sucrose on a weight basis. By acting as an agonist at the T1R2/T1R3 sweet taste receptor heterodimer, DBS-002 provides a sweet taste without the caloric content or glycemic impact associated with traditional sugars. Dandu Biosciences utilizes a recombinant production platform to manufacture the protein, aiming to provide a scalable and consistent source for use in therapeutic diets and potentially as a direct metabolic intervention. The program is currently in the preclinical proof-of-concept stage.
