Overview

THC cannabis extract is a Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC)-dominant natural botanical extract derived from the *Cannabis sativa* plant. Unlike purified pharmaceutical cannabinoids such as dronabinol, this whole-plant extract is supplied by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Drug Supply Program for research purposes. It is primarily used as an investigational tool to evaluate the pharmacokinetic profile and potential drug-drug interactions of cannabis. In clinical studies led by Johns Hopkins University (NCT04201197), the extract is administered orally to assess its inhibitory effects on various hepatic cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzymes, including CYP1A2, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2D6, and CYP3A. The primary biological activity is mediated through the agonism of cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2.
