Overview

Theabrownin is a complex, water-soluble phenolic pigment and a primary bioactive component found in fermented teas, most notably Pu-erh tea. It is formed during the fermentation process through the oxidative polymerization of polyphenols like catechins, theaflavins, and thearubigins. Theabrownin has demonstrated various pharmacological activities, including anti-tumor, anti-obesity, cholesterol-lowering, and blood glucose-regulating effects. In the context of oncology, it has been shown to inhibit the proliferation and induce apoptosis of hepatocellular carcinoma cells by activating the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathway and modulating the expression of pro-apoptotic (Bax, Bim, PUMA) and anti-apoptotic (Bcl-2) proteins.
