Overview

Theacrine is a naturally occurring purine alkaloid structurally similar to caffeine and found in certain teas (notably Camellia assamica var. kucha) and plants such as Cupuaçu. It is marketed under the brand name TeaCrine. Theacrine acts primarily as a central nervous system stimulant at higher doses and may have sedative effects at lower doses. Its mechanism of action involves antagonism of adenosine receptors (A1 and A2A), which reduces fatigue and promotes alertness—similar to caffeine—but with less habituation or cardiovascular stimulation. Theacrine also appears to modulate dopaminergic pathways by activating dopamine receptors involved in motivation and mood enhancement[5][6][8]. Additional reported effects include anti-inflammatory activity via interference with histamine and serotonin signaling[3], antioxidant properties[4], potential improvements in cognitive function and energy levels[5][6], as well as possible benefits for lipid metabolism[7]. It is primarily used as an ingredient in dietary supplements aimed at enhancing mental performance or physical energy.
