Overview

Thealoz is a preservative-free ophthalmic solution containing 3% trehalose, a naturally occurring disaccharide known for its osmoprotective and bioprotective properties. Developed by Laboratoires Théa, it is primarily indicated for the management of dry eye disease (DED). Trehalose acts as an 'anhydrobiotic' agent, helping ocular surface cells (corneal and conjunctival epithelial cells) withstand environmental stress and dehydration by stabilizing cell membranes and protecting proteins from denaturation. This physical stabilization mechanism helps break the vicious cycle of inflammation and desiccation associated with dry eye syndrome. Thealoz is widely used as a tear substitute and has served as the base for several combination formulations, including Thealoz Duo (which adds sodium hyaluronate for enhanced lubrication) and Thealoz Total (which adds NAAGA for anti-inflammatory effects).
