Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Theaphenon 95 is a highly purified green tea extract containing 95% epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCG), a polyphenol compound with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It was investigated by the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans as a potential neuroprotective add-on therapy for patients with relapsing-remitting or secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (MS). The drug's mechanism of action is thought to involve the protection of brain cells from oxidative stress and the modulation of inflammatory pathways, potentially preserving neuronal integrity as measured by chemical markers like N-Acetyl-Aspartate (NAA). A Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT02011451) was initiated to evaluate its safety and neuroprotective effects at a total daily dose of 800mg, but the study was subsequently withdrawn before completion.
