Theaphenon E is a standardized botanical extract derived from green tea (*Camellia sinensis*), primarily composed of polyphenolic catechins. Its major active constituent is epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), typically comprising over 65-70% of the preparation, along with other catechins such as epigallocatechin (EGC) and epicatechin gallate (ECG). Developed by Mitsui Norin, it is utilized in clinical research for its potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and chemopreventive properties. The mechanism involves the modulation of oxidative stress, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, and interference with signaling pathways involved in carcinogenesis and metabolic disorders like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). It has been studied extensively in Phase 2 trials for the prevention of various cancers, including prostate, lung, and colorectal cancers.
