Thebacon is a semisynthetic opioid analgesic and antitussive of the morphinan class, structurally related to hydrocodone and codeine. It acts primarily as an opioid receptor agonist, exerting its effects mainly through conversion in the liver to more potent opioids such as hydromorphone via CYP2D6 metabolism. Thebacon has slightly higher potency than hydrocodone and is approximately eight times stronger than codeine by weight. It was formerly used in Europe under brand names like Acedicon for pain relief and cough suppression but is now rarely used clinically. In the United States, it is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance due to its high abuse potential and lack of accepted medical use[1][2][3][7].
