Thenalidine

Thenalidine is an antihistamine with anticholinergic properties, primarily used as an antipruritic and antiallergic agent. It acts as a competitive antagonist at the histamine H1 receptor, thereby blocking the effects of histamine and alleviating symptoms such as itching, swelling, and inflammation associated with allergic reactions. Its anticholinergic activity also contributes to reducing secretions and relaxing smooth muscle. Thenalidine was introduced in the early 1950s for dermatologic and allergic conditions but was withdrawn from the US, Canadian, and UK markets in 1963 due to its association with severe adverse effects such as neutropenia (agranulocytosis)[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
