Overview

Thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTFA) is a small molecule chelating agent and experimental pharmacological inhibitor of cellular respiration. Its primary mechanism is inhibition of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex II (succinate dehydrogenase), where it binds at the quinone reduction site and prevents ubiquinone from binding. This action blocks electron transport at complex II in animals and bacteria. TTFA also inhibits NADH fumarate reductase in bacteria and photosystem II in plants. It has been used as a reagent for spectrophotometric determination of metal ions due to its strong chelation properties with various metals including lanthanum, zirconium, hafnium and neodymium. In research settings it is used for organic synthesis (as a ligand), coordination chemistry (preparation of metal complexes), analytical chemistry (metal ion quantification), material science applications and as a fluorescent probe for detecting metals[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
