Overview

theophylline + etofylline is a fixed-dose combination bronchodilator consisting of two xanthine derivatives. Theophylline acts as a non-selective phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitor, which increases intracellular cAMP levels, and as a competitive antagonist at adenosine receptors, leading to the relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle. Etofylline (also known as etophylline or 7-(2-hydroxyethyl)theophylline) is a derivative of theophylline that is included to enhance the solubility of the formulation and provide synergistic bronchodilatory effects with potentially improved tolerability. This combination is primarily indicated for the management of obstructive airway diseases, including chronic asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and apnea of prematurity. It is commonly manufactured by companies such as SiNi Pharma and Zydus Lifesciences, and is available in various dosage forms including oral syrups, tablets, and injections.
