TheraCour-HSV2 is a preclinical nanomedicine candidate developed by NanoViricides, under license from AllExcel and TheraCour Pharma, for the treatment of genital ulcers caused by Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2). The drug utilizes the proprietary TheraCour polymeric micelle platform to create "nanoviricides"—biomimetic nanostructures designed to identify and neutralize specific viruses. These micelles are engineered to display ligands that mimic the host cell receptors used by HSV-2 for entry, such as heparan sulfate. Upon binding to the virus, the flexible polymeric shell of the micelle is thought to wrap around and engulf the viral particle, potentially dismantling the viral envelope and preventing the infection of healthy cells. The candidate is currently in preclinical development, with the goal of providing a topical treatment for genital herpes outbreaks.
