Overview

Theraflu is an over-the-counter brand of combination medications formulated to relieve symptoms associated with the common cold and flu, such as nasal congestion, cough, sore throat pain, headache, body aches, and fever. Various formulations exist under the Theraflu brand; a typical example is "Theraflu Daytime Severe Cold & Cough," which contains acetaminophen (a non-opioid analgesic and antipyretic), dextromethorphan hydrobromide (a centrally acting cough suppressant), and phenylephrine hydrochloride (an alpha-adrenergic agonist used as a nasal decongestant). Some nighttime versions substitute or add diphenhydramine hydrochloride (an antihistamine) for additional symptom relief. The mechanism of action involves inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis in the CNS for acetaminophen; suppression of the medullary cough center for dextromethorphan; vasoconstriction via alpha-adrenergic receptor stimulation for phenylephrine; and histamine H1 receptor antagonism for diphenhydramine[1][2][4][5].
