Thiabendazole

Thiabendazole is a synthetic benzimidazole derivative and a small molecule anthelmintic (anti-worm) and antifungal agent. It is primarily used to treat infections caused by nematodes such as threadworm (Strongyloides stercoralis), pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis), hookworm, whipworm, roundworm, and trichinosis. Thiabendazole acts by inhibiting the mitochondrial enzyme fumarate reductase in susceptible organisms, disrupting their energy metabolism. It also functions as a chelating agent for certain metal poisonings and has been used as a post-harvest fungicide in agriculture. The drug was first introduced in 1962 and is considered the drug of choice for strongyloidiasis[1][2][3][4][5].
