Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Thiamazole (also known as methimazole) is a synthetic thioamide antithyroid drug used primarily for the treatment of hyperthyroidism, including Graves' disease, toxic multinodular goiter, and thyrotoxic crisis. It is also administered as a preparatory measure prior to thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine therapy. Thiamazole acts by inhibiting the enzyme thyroid peroxidase, which prevents the iodination of tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin and the subsequent coupling of iodotyrosyl residues, thereby reducing the synthesis of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). It is administered orally and is widely used globally as a first-line antithyroid therapy.
